Your map and your chat box are your best helps in-game to figure out what is where. As you complete agent missions in EVE, you will start to head out to more and more areas of space. Use your notepad tool and make a note or even a bookmark for anything that looks interesting - agents you want to visit later, good mining spots, faction bases, etc.
Information helps a lot, and do not forget to talk to your fellow players - even if you just leave the chat box open while you are doing other things, sometimes what is being said will catch your eye, and you can make a note and get back to it later.
Your map can be filtered to show where the latest pod kills were, for example if you are looking for a pirate gang or a good pvp area. It can also show you security levels, traffic areas and give you other suggestions on what might be a good system to visit for your current needs.
